Is your creativity in a funk? Are you having trouble writing that hit song? Can’t seem to get started because you don’t know where the starting line is?
One good way to get going is to write a creativity list.
A list will give you a few choices without straining your brain while you stair at a plank page. The pressure of filling that blank page can be enormous. Avoiding the blank page or the silent instrument is a key to getting started.
Here is how you start:
- If you are writing lyrics find 10 unrelated words from the dictionary and write them on a piece of paper.
- Write one sentence about each of those words
- Write a sentence that connects each of those words into a story
- Re write until it makes sense…
This should get your mind in the creative groove!
If you are writing music try this:
- Pick 2-6 notes
- Pick a chord quality for each note (Major or Minor Chord etc…)
- Play them in a sequence
- Play that sequence backward
- Start the sequence in the middle
Have you heard any combinations you like yet?
The point is to get some sound out of your instrument and maybe you will stumble upon something that you like.
Creating lists can jumpstart your creativity even if the writing you start with is abandoned for a new idea that sprung into your conscious.
